Hips Don’t Lie: Athletic Wear for Real Women

I don’t know if I’m an apple or a pear. Bananas are nice, but I doubt I’m one of those either. I just don’t like comparing my body to a fruit basket. But I do know this: I have hips…and thighs. And good lord, yes, a butt.

I consider myself active and have a (fairly) healthy lifestyle, but no amount of squats, crunches or sprints will ever rid me of my curves. Real woman have curves, remember? So then why was it so hard for me to find athletic wear for women that actually fits well and gives me the support I need? I was so sick of avoiding the mirrors at the gym (or worse, skipping a workout entirely) because my too snug tank top was inching up past my belly button with each squat, and my shorts were riding up my thighs with each stride on the treadmill. Do you know how hard it is to sprint when you’ve got one hand between your thighs trying to pull your shorts back to a more G-rated location? Difficult and unattractive. Exercise is supposed to make you feel better about yourself and yet, somehow, it was making me feel worse.

Armani and Reebok debut a collaborative collection with the help of 10 SportsU Models!

Giorgio Armani and Reebok International announced a global alliance to create a special collection, combining active style with sport and technology.

The cobranded Emporio Armani/EA7 and Reebok collection features both sporting goods and sneakers; the line is described as a blend of style and function.

The collection will be available in Emporio Armani stores and select Reebok concept stores!

Kellogg’s partners with Dr. Andy Baldwin to Promote Health, Nutrition & Fitness!

SLU partnered Dr. Andy Baldwin with Kellogg Company in a joint effort to promote health, nutrition and fitness to U.S. military families.

Aside from being the former star of ABC’s hit show “The Bachelor – An Officer and a Gentleman”, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Andrew Baldwin, M.D. is a Physician, Humanitarian, and Navy Diver at the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington, D.C. where he serves as a spokesman and advocate for Navy medicine.

Additionally as an Ironman Triathlete, and National Health/Fitness Specialist, he assists the U.S. Surgeon General with his nationwide initiative to combat childhood obesity through program called “Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future.”

Participants in the Leanest Team Challenge (LTC) compete (along with other participants from other U.S. military installations) against other installations to lose weight, using the Special K Challenge® as a guide.

Parkour Prodigy | Adam Dunlap

SU Model, Adam Dunlap is the Founder and Director of Revolution Parkour, the first academy of it’s kind in the area!

What is Parkour you ask? Parkour is an athletic discipline, in which participants traverse any environment in the most efficient way possible using their physical abilities, and which commonly involves running, jumping, vaulting, rolling and other similar physical movements.

Adam and his team are dedicated to teaching their students proper Parkour technique along with its philosophy and purpose, with training the physical condition comprised of strength, range of motion, aerobic endurance, bone density, joint alignment, and structural efficiency.

Since the company’s inception, Adam has been the head Parkour instructor at the Revolution Parkour Academy where he has taught and mentored students ranging in age from 5 to 67.

As a professional Parkour athlete, Adam has performed and has been featured on and in numerous local and national news broadcasts, print publications, and internet articles. He has acted, performed, and provided Parkour consultation in commercial productions, and he has modeled for international apparel giants Nike and Adidas.

Adam actually suffered from Crohn’s disease, and attributes healing his body to discovering a diet and exercise plan that incorporates parkour. Adam recently told his story, and how he’s overcome obstacles to CBN TV.

Bree Dennis hit the genetics jack-pot.

She is by definition the ‘perfect’ athletic FIT model. In fact, Bree has made a career out of being a ‘human mannequin’ as so to speak.

What is a FIT Model you ask? A fit model is a person who is hired by an apparel manufacturer to check the fit, drape and visual appearance of a design on a human, acting as a live mannequin. The role of a fit model is very important to the design process by providing feedback on the fit, movement and feel of the garment. The base patterns for each style are generally perfected on the fit model and then graded to make patterns for smaller and larger sizes in a sizing system/set.

A fit model is generally very different from a runway model, who is hired to show the garment in a fashion show. FIT models are also generally not featured in advertisements or photography. FIT models are selected based primarily on his or her body size and proportions relative to the characteristics of particular brand’s target market.

Generally the fit model is one of the smaller sizes in the size range, for example a size 8 or 10 in a Misses size for females. A good fit model can tell when the fit of the sample garment does not feel correct, even when it appears to fit well from the outside.

Bree works for various active apparel brands in the Pacific NW. Bree says it’s easy for her to maintain her ‘perfect’ measurements, as a single Mom of four kids who are all involved in sports! When Bree’s not FIT modeling, she’s busy being a referee, chauffeur, chef and tutor to her kids!
