Deception is standard procedure for many contestants on Survivor. But in the case of Michael Jefferson, SLU fitness model and star of the 24th season of Survivor: One World, premiering tonight at 8/7 c, it’s appearances that might be deceiving. He’s been labeled by the show’s host as the villain of the season, and his look certainly suggests the banker might be as conniving as his occasionally raised eyebrow.
But as soon as I get him talking, I can’t help but question the label he’s been given. One of the first things he brings up is his volunteer work as a mentor with Big Brothers, Big Sisters. “I hang out with this awesome kid, Matt, and we basically just run around the woods all day,” says Jefferson.
The 30-year-old Marysville native is much more comfortable exploring the great outdoors than sitting behind a desk. “I love the Northwest,” says the avid hiker. “Anything you want is right here—lakes, rivers, mountains, anything!”
Jefferson camps, hikes, plays soccer, and hits the gym five times a week, which viewers can expect to give him an edge in the rigorous games on the show. “It was definitely something I wanted,” he says, “and I had to apply three times to prove it!”
He explains that the premise of this season is a battle of the sexes. Jefferson, who was Washington’s Hottest Bachelor in Cosmopolitan, noted before the games started that he was “definitely looking for a Mrs. Jefferson—and she could be on this island.”
But with men and women on opposing teams, was there really any room for romance? Jefferson grins and admits, “I am actually dating someone now,” but won’t confide whether or not it’s a fellow contestant.
Changing the subject, what I really want to know is how a philanthropic, romantic, Northwestern mountain man got labeled as Survivor’s newest “villain.”
He laughs when I ask about it, clearly not bothered by the stigma. “You know, at first I wanted to go in as the hero—of course. But now I love it! I’m going with it!”
It’s true that the rules change when you’re on the island, though I have a hard time believing he’s done anything nefarious enough to earn true villain status. Watch the premiere tonight on CBS to find out, and check back with us for more insider perspective as we follow Michael throughout the season.

Remember that great Athleta video we shared on Wednesday? Well, the accompanying catalog is out, and a gang of SLU fitness models are all over it. Check out who was there with a sampling of some of our favorite shots below!
Lauren C can be seen staring us down from yet another cover shot, taken in Belize:
Lauren is an all-star track athlete who will be training for the Olympic trials in high-jump this summer. She is also an expert gymnast, runner, and power-weights lifter.
Fitness model Katie D went for it with a sprint on the beach in Kauai, and we’re loving the inspirational words lining up alongside her. It’s a pretty sweet campaign:
Katie is a runner and an avid soccer player who also can lift some serious weights. This was her first Athleta booking, and we couldn’t be more proud! Way to go, Katie!
Danielle H, seen above, is a pro on the volleyball court and — as you might be able to tell from those triceps — rocks the shot put, among a long list of other track and field events.
Then there’s Drisana, our resident yoga queen:
Drisana is also a personal trainer, track and field athlete, and cyclist–there’s really not much that the lady can’t do.
Corinne G , seen above, is our girl for all things water–whether it’s freestyle, snorkeling, jet skiing or surfing, this native Hawaiian has it handled.
Want to see more? Check out the Spring 2012 Athleta catalog for some great shots, fitness models, and an array of awesome women’s workout gear. Thanks, Athleta!

Women’s fitness apparel company Athleta recently released this inspiring video featuring SLU fitness models Corinne G, Drisana C, Monica C, Lauren C, Danielle H and Katie D. The shoot took place over multiple days and locations, including beautiful Belize and Kauai, HI. For fitness model Katie D it was a first-time booking with the iconic company! Congrats, girl! “It was amazing!” she says of the experience, “the shoot went really well, and the cast and crew had a lot of fun together. It was also my first time to Hawaii!” You can see her in the first shot of the video, running her heart out on the gorgeous North Shore. Check back in on Friday for a sampling of the final prints!
Big thanks to Athleta for treating our girls so wonderfully!

If you pick up the latest issue of Runner’s World, you may see a familiar face. That’s because fitness model Lauren C has been on the cover twice before–and for good reason! She’s the real deal when it comes to track and field, and this summer the 24-year-old will even be competing in the US Olympic Trials for high jump. How does this fitness model/potential Olympic athlete keep her head in the game? “It’s important to enjoy the process,” she told Runner’s World at the photoshoot, “and with that I think the results will come.”
Way to go, Lauren! We’ll be rooting for you this summer!

Seattle model Corey W was recently featured on the innovative Ben Trovato fashion blog, an online showcase that highlights “the works of some of the most promising talents in fashion photography.” Photographer Kyle Goldie and stylist Gabriel Aguayo worked with Corey to create Mutiny, a fashion editorial inspired by the sea captains of 1930’s Alaska. In a park outside Seattle, rugged landscapes and chilly waters set the tone for each shot—but even near-freezing temperatures couldn’t stop the model and crew from having fun. As our Seattle model noted, there was plenty of reason to stay positive. “The chemistry between the crew and photographer was phenomenal,” says Corey of the friendly attitudes and smiling faces. “Plus, we got some really hilarious looks! People came out all bundled up, only to see this bearded man being photographed in his underwear.” Yeah, that might draw some attention. Here’s just a sampling of the gorgeous spread:
Check out the full editorial here. Thanks, Ben Trovato!
